What are Common Core Standards ?

Educational standards describe what students should know and be able to do in each subject in each grade. In California, the State Board of Education decides on the standards for all students, from kindergarten through high school. The California Department of Education helps schools make sure that all students are meeting the standards.

Since 2010, 45 states have adopted the same standards for English and math. These standards are called the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Having the same standards helps all students get a good education, even if they change schools or move to a different state. Teachers, parents, and education experts designed the CCSS to prepare students for success in college and the workplace.

Common Core In the Classroom (Back to Top)

With the implementation of Common Core, hands-on activities and collaborative exercises will be much more prevalent, and English students will see a shift toward nonfiction texts. Media skills will be integrated into everyday lessons, writing will be shared with outside audiences and next-generation assessments will evaluate higher order processes.

Math classes will teach fewer concepts, but they will reach new depths in exploring those concepts. Students will be challenged with more real-world applications and fewer theoretical equations, and there will be a greater emphasis on learning the process rather than merely providing the correct answer.

New Brochures February 2016

What kinds of things will my child learn in mathematics and English language arts in first grade? In high school? New brochures focused on the California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and English Language Arts/Literacy help teachers and other educators answer such questions. The eight new brochures, four in each subject area, are organized by grade spans (K–2, 3–5, 6–8, 9–12) and provide insights into what students will be learning.

The brochures on the mathematics standards showcase example problems, and the brochures on the ELA/Literacy standards highlight the progression of learning through the grade levels. Each brochure also provides suggestions for parents/guardians to support their students’ learning and a list of additional resources.

The brochures can be downloaded from the Sacramento County Office of Education Web page individually:

Beginning as early as March 10, 2015, districts will administer Smarter Balanced Assessments, computer-based tests aligned with the state's rigorous new standards for English language arts/literacy and math. Smarter Balanced is part of a comprehensive new testing program called California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP), which replaces the Standardized Testing and Reporting Program that expired on July 1, 2013.
